The creative drive within humans and our avatars is a powerful thing . So much of a powerful thing in fact that we just can’t stop. We look for every possible opportunity to make something, anything, in words, pictures, music, bits of old wood anything. You only have to look at the creativity within Second Life to be truly amazed at what springs forth from our infinite imaginations. It is quite something and is the foundation of the metaverse we love. It is the one consistent thing that avatars cite as the reason they stay despite the well known things that ‘could be better’.

The photos in this post represent creativity, with the light of imagination in my right hand and the means to create in the left. A blank canvas or a stack of blank prim boxes is always exciting to me, I usually have an idea of what I want to create but have no real idea of where it will ultimately lead. Creating in-world is great for fostering this process, something which is lost at times when building on a 3d program.

The way we express that creativity SL though has changed dramatically over the last couple of years firstly with the introduction of sculpts and more recently with the advent of mesh. Mesh is in my humble opinion is a game changer. I recently visited Neva Crystall’s Neva Sky Villi which is 90% mesh and looked really great. However, I did feel a little for the poor tenants that live there nestled amongst the high end boutiques and bijou shops as its popularity will guarantee they will get no peace. Mesh is the way forward.
This poses a number of dilemmas not just for myself as a creator but for anyone building in Second Life whether that be clothes, hair, shoes, houses or whatever. Although prims still have their place (they rez faster, are low lag, easy to build) they lack the detail and realism that mesh can give. So does this mean everything must now be made out of mesh or be consigned to trash? This will mean a lot of re-work for me upgrading all of my houses and a lot of re-work for a lot of merchants.

This has led me to wonder about my future in Second Life as my conundrum is that my best selling house is still 100% prim based (give or take a couple of sculpts). Whereas my mesh or part mesh builds are still popular the full prim cottage wins hands down. And I’m not entirely sure why.
So I’ve set up a SURVEY to understand more about what people want from their ideal home. Do avis really want super low prim 100% mesh houses they can’t really modify? I conducted a similar survey earlier in the year and the results were curious and not quite as expected, so it will be interesting to see if things have changed. Surveys take a while to get going so this one will be up for while, so let me have your views, it’s all anonymous unless you want to leave your avi name and then I can say hi!
